While picture quality and functionality still reign supreme, digital camera manufacturers now offer sleek form factors and fashionable colors. Canon's latest Digital Elph, the PowerShot SD30, offers it all in a small, attractive package.
No bigger than a candy bar cell phone, the 3.8 x 1.8 x 0.9 in. SD30 weighs a scant 4.8 oz. and can slip easily in any pants pocket or clutch purse. It's a perfect party camera.
Despite its diminutive size, this little dynamo packs a lot of features. The 5-megapixel SD30 can take superb pictures that have vivid colors. It will work well outdoors and in lower-light settings, such as at a company party or at happy hour after work.
While the camera does offer digital-zoom capabilities -- a more or less useless feature on all digital cameras -- the 2.4 optical zoom is great for framing that perfect shot of your buddies. And, while small, the flash works perfectly in low-light settings.
The camera offers no viewfinder, but does have an easy-to-view 1.8 in. LCD screen for taking and reviewing pictures. There are 16 shooting modes to choose from, including a "My Colors Mode" for completely customizing camera settings.
In a move to make electronics gear more fashionable, Canon lets you accentuate your ensemble with the choice of four different colors, including "rockstar red" and "vivacious violet." The included iPod-esque desktop cradle blends fashion and function and serves as both a power charger and docking station for transferring photos to a PC.
While it is not designed for taking professional-quality panoramic landscape pictures of the Grand Canyon, the new $399 SD30 offers just the right mix of size and quality to capture memorable moments in a night out on the town. Stick it in your pocket or purse and you are ready to go.
We give it a rating of 4.5 out of 5.
